RIFFE GALLERY HOSTS VSAO ACCESSIBLE EXPRESSIONS TOUR
ArtworkThe Ohio Arts Council's Riffe Gallery hosts VSA arts of Ohio's Accessible Expressions in the lobby of the Vern Riffe Center until June 30.   For more than 13 years Accessible Expressions has been the only known statewide adjudicated art exhibition and tour for persons with disabilities.  The work of more than 90 Ohio artists was on display at the opening ceremony in February hosted by the Westerville Community Center.  A smaller portion of the exhibition tours around the state to stops in Columbus, Dayton, Sandusky, Xenia and other locations.  VSA arts of Ohio is an organization dedicated to empowering peopls with disabilities, creatively and inclusively through the arts. 

RIFFE GALLERY HOSTS AN EVENING OF CREATIVE WRITING WITH
MIMI BRODSKY CHENFELD

APereyma_folksongs_002MailDogThe Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery invites you to gather your paper and pencils and pour your creative soul into an evening of writing inspired by 39 paintings by 12 Ohio artists in the exhibition New Narratives: Paintings by Ohio Artists.  Educator, author and writer Mimi Brodsky Chenfeld hosts the workshop Wednesday, June 24, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Gallery.

New Narratives: Paintings by Ohio Artists is open through July 12, 2009.  Curated by Dominique H. Vasseur, Columbus Museum of Art, this exhibition explores the various themes and styles of narrative painting by 12 Ohio artists ranging from traditional figurative compositions to others using signs and symbols.

Artists in the exhibition include Ron Anderson, Columbus; Adam Brouillette, Columbus; Donna Coleman, Oberlin; Diane Fitch, Yellow Springs; Edwin George, Kent, Deborah Morrissey-McGoff, Cincinnati; Aka Pereyma, Troy; Lisa Schare, Cincinnati; Michael R. Stillion, Cincinnati; Laura R. Vinnedge, Akron; Brian R. Williams, Columbus; and Ronnie Williams, Dayton.

OHIO ARTS COUNCIL HOLDS WORKSHOP FOR LEADERS OF CULTURALLY DIVERSE ARTS ORGANIZATIONS
The Ohio Arts Council (OAC) will hold a Building Cultural Diversity (BCD) workshop Wednesday, June 17, 2009 from 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn –Worthington, 7007 N. High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43085.

The workshop will be the OAC’s second annual Professional Development Day for leaders of culturally diverse arts organizations. The workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to learn more about fundraising in these challenging times, discuss OAC grant programs with staff and network with colleagues. Facilitator Kerri Laubenthal Mollard of Mollard Consulting will lead participants in a series of exercises designed to increase organizational and fundraising effectiveness.

Participants may register online. Due to state regulations concerning the provision of food, all registrants are required to pay a registration fee of $35. This fee covers the cost of session materials, continental breakfast, lunch and snacks.


OHIO ARTS JOBS PRESERVATION GRANTS

StudioSpaceMailDogThe Ohio Arts Council’s (OAC) Ohio Arts Jobs Preservation Grant program is a one-time funding opportunity for eligible nonprofit organizations including arts organizations (dance, drama/theatre, folk and traditional arts, literary arts, multi‐disciplinary, media/film, music, and the visual arts); local arts agencies including those funded through units of local governments; and arts service organizations that can help advance the goals of the NEA, the OAC and this new grant program. Grants are to be used solely for preserving full and/or part‐time jobs in these eligible organizations.  The program is supported through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds received from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Eligible projects are limited to
• Salary support, full or partial, for one or more positions that are critical to an organization's artistic mission and that are in jeopardy or have been recently eliminated as a result of the current economic climate.
And/or
• Fees for previously engaged artists and/or contractual personnel for the upcoming season to maintain or expand the period during which such persons would be engaged.

You must submit your application by 5 p.m. June 15, 2009 to the OAC’s OnLine Grant Application (OLGA) system.  More information regarding eligibility, guidelines and how to apply is located on the OAC’s Web site.

NAMES IN THE NEWS
INLET GETS AWARD

Inlet Dance Theatre in Cleveland Heights was recently honored with a 2009 Award of Achievement from Northern Ohio Live Magazine.  The awards honor the people and organizations whose talent and industry enhance the quality of life in northeast Ohio.  Inlet Dance Theatre is a dance company dedicated to performing with a high level of quality, skill, innovation and purpose.  Its education and programming extends to people of all ages.  Inlet was founded in 2001 and has received several grants from the Ohio Arts Council.   

BILL O’BRIEN APPOINTED DEPUTY CHAIRMAN FOR GRANTS AND AWARDS FOR THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS

In late May, the White House appointed Bill O’Brien deputy chairman for Grants and Awards for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).  O’Brien previously served as the NEA’s theater/musical theater director for nearly three years.  Prior to that he was managing and producing director of Deaf West Theater and was a performer for stage, television and film.

LEAGUE OF HISTORIC AMERICAN THEATRES ANNOUNCES CONFERENCE IN JULY

The League of Historic American Theatres announces its 33rd Annual Conference and Theatre Tour will be held in Cleveland July 15 – 18, 2009.  The conference is hosted by PlayhouseSquare and will offer resources for leveraging diminishing resources to greater advantage, thinking strategically, and developing strength as change agents within organizations and communities. Conference activities will help attendees improve their historic theatres, their business and their communities.

Organizations can apply to the OAC’s Capacity Building program for funds to attend.  Capacity Building opens June 1 with a June 12 deadline.

ANNUAL IMAGINATION WRITER’S CONFERENCE HELD IN CLEVELAND JULY 7-12

Cleveland State University hosts its annual Imagination Writer’s Conference July 7-12 at Trinity Cathedral in downtown Cleveland.  The conference spans five genres: Fiction, Poetry, Creative Nonfiction, Playwriting and Screenwriting.

Writers of all levels are welcome.  The conference offers a range of workshops, individual manuscript consultations, informative craft talks and lectures, readings featuring faculty, receptions and social gatherings.  Editors and literary agents will also present basics on getting published at a one-day colloquium.
